Industrial Growth and Salt Production
Newark’s location by the salt flats of the San Francisco Bay led to the development of a strong salt industry, primarily driven by the Leslie Salt Company (which later became part of Cargill Salt). The salt industry played a significant role in Newark's economy for much of the early 20th century. Other industries also began to develop, and by the early 20th century, Newark had a mix of agriculture, industry, and a growing population.
