The Founding of Newark
Newark's more modern origins date to the 19th century. In 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad established a rail stop in the area, which greatly influenced the development of the town. It was named "Newark" after Newark Castle in Scotland by the area's surveyor and local settler, J. Barr Robertson. The establishment of the rail stop brought settlers and spurred local agriculture, especially salt production and other farming activities, as well as some industry.
