On September 22, 1955, Newark officially incorporated as a city. This was partly due to the desire of local residents to manage their own growth and development, rather than being annexed by the neighboring city of Fremont, which was also incorporating nearby communities at the time. Newark's incorporation helped it develop its own local government and manage its growth and infrastructure independently.
